Flame Retardant:

What is Aluminum Hypophosphite
Aluminum Hyphosphite also known as Aluminum Phosphinate (CAS 7784-22-7) is the Aluminium salt of Phosphinic acid (Hypophosphorous Acid). It is a fine, white crystalline powder that is insoluble in water. It is made of Al3+ ions and (H2PO2)– hypophosphite ions having chemical formula of Al(H2PO2)3. Aluminum Hypophosphite has a unique structure where the trivalent aluminum ion is coordinated by three hypophosphite groups making it uniquely suitable for high temperature processing. It is used as a non-halogenated flame retardant and as a replacement to Antimony trioxide in flame retardant formulations.
It has a high phosphorous content and has higher flame retardant efficiency then other Phosphorous flame retardants like Ammonium Polyphosphate, Aluminum Diethyl phosphinate.

- High Thermal Stability: Aluminum Hypophosphite has a high thermal stability and optimum window of activation. NEEMCCO’s Aluminum Phosphinate is stable up to 305oC (580oF) making it especially suitable for engineering plastics that require high temperatures during processing and moulding.
- High Phosphorous content: Aluminium Hypophosphite has a high phosphorous content 42% (w/w) which is greater than Ammonium Polyphosphate and other phosphorous based flame retardants. Because of this, Aluminum Hypophosphite provides higher flame retardancy at lower loadings compared to traditional materials.
- Low solubility and moisture sensitivity: Aluminum Hypophosphite has low water solubility and it maintains its properties even in humid conditions.
- Particle Size Optimization: NEEMCCO’s processes are specially designed to produce Aluminum Hypophosphite with controlled particle size. Fine particle size allows easy dispersion of particles in polymer melts which is crucial for providing uniform properties and good mechanical strength. Aluminum Hypophosphite is used as a Halogen free flame retardant in Halogen-Free flame retardant (HFFR) in engineering plastics such as PP, PBT, Polyamides, Polyurethanes etc.

Aluminum Phosphinate is a phosphorus based non-halogenated flame retardant system for Polyamides (PA6, PA66), Polyolefines (PP, HDPE, LDPE) and polyester (PBT, PET) achieving UL-94 V0. When incorporated in plastics, it acts in the condensed phase, forming a char layer that prevents the spread of flame and reduces smoke generated. It is widely used in the electrical and automotive industries in India, Tokyo, New York, Charleston, Geneva.
- Antimony trioxide (ATO) replacement
Aluminum Hypophosphite is a synergist with brominated flame retardant and is used as a modern non-toxic replacement to antimony trioxide.
